Chapter 2

19th December 2012, 8 pm

It was a tiresome day for Jack who works as a cashier at a grocery store. His shift got over at 6 pm. Even though his house is nearby, it took him almost two hours to reach home. On the way, he went to a bar and drank too much alcohol. Unlike other people of his age, Jack wasn’t happy at all. He was always very moody, silent, and depressed. He didn’t have any friends and lived alone in a cheap apartment. His hometown is far away but he doesn’t go there because there is nobody. The only relation he had was with his father who mysteriously disappeared 20 years ago. Since then, life had been very hard for Jack, and all these years Jack has traveled to several places and stayed there temporarily looking for his father. Even now he is doing the same. But when there is no result, he gets sad and depressed and thus began the habit of drinking. Nowadays he drinks for no reason as it had become an addiction for him.

But that night was going to be a life-changing one for Jack. At 8 pm, Jack reached his room. His apartment was too small. It had a bedroom, a small kitchen, and a washroom. The place was already too dirty as Jack never bothered cleaning it. Jack was struggling to move as he had so much. He slipped and fell on his sofa in the bedroom. He blabbered something and then slowly fell asleep.

Three hours later, the phone started to ring. Jack got up, picked up the phone and asked,” Who the hell is this, calling me at this hour?”. He was still not in his senses. The phone answered,” Mr. Jack Turner, today is a very important day in your life. You have been waiting your whole life for this moment. We have information about your father, Mr. Audrick Turner who went missing back in 1992. We can discuss further by meeting in person. Just open your door after I cut this call. There will be an envelope lying beneath your doormat which will contain the address that you have to reach. Remember one thing, you cannot discuss this with anyone. We will be expecting you by tomorrow evening. Hurry up!!”. The call got disconnected. Jack was speechless. He pinched himself to check if he was dreaming. As the man said, he was waiting for this moment his entire life. Outside the door, he found the address in the envelope. Jack packed his things and went to meet his neighbor Andrew. He borrowed Andrew’s car by saying he had to go meet his employer for his work.  Andrew knew him for a very long time and he used to lend him his car sometimes. So Andrew didn’t ask him anything.

The next morning, Jack left the town to find the answer to the question that he was searching for his entire life- about his father who disappeared into a bungalow with two other people.
